A data accuracy check performed by having the disk read data to the controller, which in turn checks for errors but does not pass the data on to the system.

Sometimes while transferring data from a damaged disk, the damaged disk releases the expected amount of raw data but in a seemingly random order. Such a copy is worthless. The problem is due to a physically damaged disk, which causes errors in the location/addressing information.
